Open Family Medicine Positions
Family medicine is a general medical practice providing primary care to patients of all genders and ages. Family medical doctors are sometimes called general practitioners because they operate a general medical practice for treating common illnesses, diseases, and minor injuries.
The main focus of family doctors is disease prevention, health guidance, and standard health treatments and medications. Adults and children seek primary care treatment from family medicine doctors because of their broad range of specialties. In many cases, members of the same family will visit the same family doctor, which is why they are called family doctors.
There is a high demand for family medicine doctors in the healthcare industry. According to a report from the American Academy of Family Physicians, the United States is currently experiencing a shortage of family medicine doctors. As a result, any medical school student looking for a broad range of job opportunities after graduation will find them in family medicine.
The American Osteopathic Board of Family Medicine and the American Board of Family Medicine offer board certifications in family medicine for doctors in the United States. Board certifications are issued after completing a residency in family medicine and obtaining an unrestricted medical license.
Family medicine doctors must complete a four-year undergraduate program, four years of medical school, four years of residency, and at least one year of fellowship. The fellowship specialization options include geriatric medicine, adolescent medicine, hospital medicine, sleep medicine, and sports medicine.
Think of a family doctor as a combination of an internal medicine doctor and a pediatrician. A family doctor understands the function of every organ in the body and the diseases which can impact them. That is how they are qualified to help diagnose and treat illnesses in people of all ages, including children.
A family doctor may collaborate with other specialists if the nature of their patient’s health problem is beyond their capacity. Once the family doctor diagnoses a particular health problem, they may refer their patient to a specialist for further diagnostic testing and advanced treatments. It all depends on the cause and severity of the underlying health issue.
