Family medicine doctors must complete a four-year undergraduate program, four years of medical school, four years of residency, and at least one year of fellowship. The fellowship specialization options include geriatric medicine, adolescent medicine, hospital medicine, sleep medicine, and sports medicine.

A family doctor understands the function of every organ in the body and the diseases which can impact them.
